Panthers hope to hold Hornets at home

TIFTON — Three players will have their final four quarters of high school gridiron glory night at Panther Pit when the Tiftarea Academy Panthers host the Westfield School Hornets in the final game of the season.

These three, Jake Ball, Matthew Turner and Taylor Boothe, will be honored as part of Senior Night. They will try to end the season in a big way with an upset over the highly touted Westfieldians, who sport an 8-1 record. The Panthers are 1-9.

Westfield comes in as a school in the midst of a fantastic season and with a ton of momentum, past and present.

Their only loss so far on the year has been at Deerfield-Windsor, 28-7. Everyone else in GISA Region 1-AAA has fallen by blowout scores. They shutout Southland Academy, 38-0, and roasted Bulloch Academy, 38-14, and Pinewood Christian, 35-6. The game against Pinewood saw them score the contest’s first 35 points before allowing a late touchdown.

Further, the all-time series has also been a successful one for the Hornets, as they have never lost to Tiftarea, holding a 10-0 advantage. Last year, they won, 41-15.

Tiftarea’s lone win of 2012 was a homecoming victory over the Crisp Academy Wildcats, 28-12. Last week, they were defeated by Deerfield-Windsor, 48-7.

With a young team, head coach Ryan Branch is looking to a positive future. Junior Rob Flick has put up solid passing numbers all season and sophomore Ethan Mims has been one of many Panthers making an offensive impact.

It was the last inning that cost both player and team. Coffee only had one hit, but it was all they needed for a 2-1 victory that clinched the 1-AAAAAA title.
