Tiftarea, Turner, Berrien sweep opposition

TIFTON — Several Tiftarea teams enjoyed success on the hardwood over the past few days. The Tiftarea Academy Panthers, Berrien Rebels and Turner County Rebels all recorded sweeps over their opponents.

Tiftarea started the action earlier in the week against Citizens Christian. The Lady Panthers lost their game, 53-43, Jarrett McWhorter leading the way with 13.

The junior varsity split their contests. The girls took a runaway victory, 24-7, to improve their record to 5-0. In JV boys action, Tiftarea dropped to CCA, 33-29, Logan Carswell netting 17.

Against Sherwood Christian, the Panthers won, 63-60 to improve to 3-5. Rob Flick had 23 and Ethan Mims added 16.

Jarrett McWhorter had 12 points in Tiftarea’s win over Sherwood, which improved their record to 4-6.

The junior varsity boys made it a clean sweep for the evening with a 37-29 win.

In Ashburn, the Turner County Rebels saw a pair of high-scoring games against the Greenville Patriots.

The Lady Rebels wasted no time getting started, scoring 23 in the first quarter while giving up only seven. The offense would slow a bit in the second, but would explode again in the second half. Turner scored 23 in the third quarter and 21 more in the fourth. Greenville would match them in the final frame, but it was too late and the home team walked out with a 78-51 win.

Antania Graddic scored 21 points and snagged 12 rebounds. Mylashia Yancey added 20 points and Zenia Coley scored 17.

While the Rebels also had a big scoring night, Greenville proved to be their equal for most of it. Turner had a 40-37 halftime lead and looked like they would breeze through as they had an 11-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. However, the score was tied at 71 at the end of regulation. Turner, though,  regained scoring laurels and won 86-82 in a wild overtime period.

Antonio Graddic led his team with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Xavier Thomas scored 13 and Quan Hillmon added 11.

In the Cook Holiday Tournament, Berrien took the measure of the Echols County Wildcats in a pair of games.

The Rebelettes won 57-40 behind Melveshia Wright’s 17 and Stefanie Scurry’s 17.

The Rebels picked up their second win of the year with a 50-46 win. Alphonso Boone had 16.
