Hornets shut out Dodge, 21-0
Special to the Gazette
TIFTON — After entering the state Class AA football playoffs with a 7-3 record and as the fourth seed from Region 1-AA, the Cook High Hornets are now cruising into the state’s third round after a 21-0 victory over the Dodge County Indians Friday night in Eastman.
“It was a big night for the Hornets,” said Cook head coach Jim Scroggins.
Cook opened up its scoring with a touchdown pass from T.J. Payne to Kenny Tippins.
Jermato Harris would later add Cook’s second touchdown on a 20-yard scoring run.
Shannon Brown would then close out the scoring with a 2-yard plunge.
Matt Dobbins added the point after on all three touchdowns.
Late in the game, Payne intercepted a pass in the end zone and returned it 103 yards for an apparent touchdown. However the play was called back by a clipping penalty. The infraction occurred several yards behind the runner, according to the Cook coaches.
Michael Henley also had a long interception return for Cook.
Scroggins was happy for his team.
“I don’t think they (Dodge) expected us to come in here and beat them like that,” said the first-year Cook head coach.
With the victory the Hornets will be on the road again Friday against the Greater Atlanta Christian Spartans. GAC advanced with a 26-7 second-round win over the Calhoun High Yellow Jackets.
