Friday proved to be sweet for some area teams, while it was bitter for others during the opening round of the state football playoffs.

Fitzgerald 33, Screven County 7

The Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes ran for 314 yards while beating up on Screven County at home Friday in a 33-7 win.

Jemea Thomas ran for 139 yards on 14 attempts, and Trenton Pruitt gained 114 yards on eight tries to go along with 34 receiving yards on three catches. Larry King added 42 yards on eight attempts.

Fitzgerald took the lead in the first quarter on a 1-yard dive by Nick Williams. The kick by Mauro Meza made the score 7-0.

Pruitt scored next on a 7-yard run. The kick was blocked, and Fitzgerald led 13-0.

In the second quarter, Pruitt added a second rushing score on a 67-yarder. The run failed, and the Canes led 19-0. Thomas then added a long one of his own, a 55-yard run for a touchdown. Meza’s kick was good, and Fitzgerald held a 26-0 lead.

The home team’s final score came on a 10-yard pass from Brad Taylor to Pruitt in the third quarter. Meza added the conversion, and Fitzgerald held a 33-0 advantage.

Screven got a 20-yard passing touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Taylor was 5-of-10 passing for 63 yards. R.J. Davis had one catch for 15 yards. Keon McCray had one catch for 14 yards.
