Fitzgerald, Charlton meet again in Class AAplayoffs

By Kyle Dean/Sports Editor

TIFTON — Familiar foes, and two old rivals will square off tonight when Fitzgerald meets Charlton County in Folkston.

Fitzgerald had been ranked in the Associated Press poll all season long, before losing two of their last three games — against Brooks County and Thomasville, that dropped the Hurricane to the No. 3 seed.

The reward for Fitzgerald is a trip to Charlton County to play the team that eliminated the Purple Hurricane last season.

In that 2007 second round playoff game in Folkston, Charlton County benefitted from five Hurricane turnovers to win the game by a 26-12 score.

Charlton had 233 yards rushing and 298 total yards in the ball game, as the Indians fell to playoff rival Buford in the Class AA quarterfinals.

Nick Williams led Fitzgerald with 53 yards on ten carries, as the Hurricane rushed for 111 yards in the contest.

This season, the Hurricane looked as though they would win the region, but a loss to Brooks County in which starting quarterback Brad Taylor did not play.

Charlton (9-1), looks as strong as ever, tying for the region championship in Region 2-AA with McIntosh County Academy and Appling County — the only team to deal the Indians a loss.

The Indians lost a coin flip to Appling County on Saturday and received the No. 2 seed due to their 20-0, head-to-head win over McIntosh County Academy.

The winner of the Fitzgerald-Charlton County game will play the winner of the Henry County-Laney (Augusta) matchup.

Game time in Folkston is set for 7:30 p.m.
