Fitzgerald blasts Greene County

By Kyle Dean/Sports Editor

FITZGERALD — Greene County delivered the first punch Friday night against Fitzgerald High, but the Purple Hurricane delivered the knockout blows.

The Hurricane scored 42 unanswered points in a 42-21 win at Jaycee Stadium.

In the first quarter, the Tigers scored on a 52-yard pass play from quarterback William Leslie to wide receiver J.R. Andrews. The drive began at the Greene 13 yard line, and the Tigers used two big pass plays to extend the drive.

Victor Tirado’s PAT gave Greene the early 7-0 lead with 9:43 remaining in the first quarter.

It took Fitzgerald just over a minute to respond.

Latravious Stewart broke off a 45-yard run and Trenton Pruitt scored on the next play from scrimmage, a 19-yard run that tied the game at 7 after an extra point by Paul Gallegos.

Greene again drove down into Hurricane territory, but Fitzgerald’s defense turned the Tigers away and forced a turnover on downs at the 19 yard line.

Kaleb Nobles connected with R.J. Davis for a 71-yard touchdown pass to give the Hurricane a 14-7 lead after the Gallegos PAT with 4:44 left in the quarter.

Nobles then connected with Stephon Smalls for a 38-yard touchdown pass that gave the Hurricane a 21-7 lead with just under two minutes left in the quarter.

Fitzgerald garnered their fourth touchdown of the quarter when the Tiger punter had the ball slip through his hands. Brice Garrett fell on the ball for a touchdown, extending the lead to 28-7, where it would remain until half time.

Nick Williams and Trenton Pruitt would add touchdowns on the ground in the third quarter, and the Canes would take a 42-7 lead into the final stanza.

Greene County (4-7) would score two fourth quarter touchdowns on the JV team to make the final 42-21.

The Hurricane ran up 396 yards of offense with 212 yards coming on the ground. Nobles completed 10 passes for 184 yards on the night. Greene County’s Leslie would finish the night with 233 yards passing and no interceptions.

Fitzgerald (11-0) will host Swainsboro Friday, after the Tigers defeated MCA 21-7.

Swainsboro is coached by former Irwin County Indian Scott Roberts.
