Fitzgerald, Worth County garner region wins

Special to the Gazette

TIFTON — Fitzgerald High remained perfect on the season after a 21-6 home win over Early County Friday night at Jaycee Stadium.

Fitzgerald jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 5:11 in the first quarter, when Brad Taylor hit Trenton Pruitt on a 9-yard touchdown pass, and Mauro Meza added the extra point.

Just before halftime, running back Nick Williams scored for Fitzgerald, and Meza’s PAT was true, and the Hurricanes led by a 14-0 score.

Early County would strike back in the third quarter with a touchdown run by Antonio Williams. However, Jemea Thomas would block the extra point, and Fitzgerald led 14-6.

But on their next drive, the Purple Hurricane scored with 1:01 left in the third quarter when Pruitt scored on a 35-yard touchdown run.

Meza added the PAT and Fitzgerald won, 21-7.

Juwan Alexander led the Fitzgerald rushing attack with 98 yards on just seven attempts. Williams had 56 yards on six carries, and Pruitt ran for 53 yards on four carries as the Hurricane ran up 272 yards of rushing offense.

Fitzgerald’s defense also played very well, allowing Early County only 159 yards of total offense.

Fitzgerald improves to 7-0 overall, and 4-0 in region play. Fitzgerald will host Brooks County in a game that could determine the region 1-AA championship.

In Perry, the Worth County Rams even their region record to 2-2 in 1-AAA with a 34-17 win over the Perry Panthers.

After Perry took a 17-14 lead with 4:18 left in the third quarter, Suderian Smith ran 80-yards for a Ram touchdown. The point after was mishandled, but Worth led 20-17.

Worth County iced the game late, after a Perry interception.

Buster Jackson ran in from 11-yards in the fourth quarter, and the Rams won 34-17.
