TIFTON — Going into their football encounter Friday night, the Berrien High Rebels had lost seven straight games against the Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes.

Having not defeated the Hurricanes since 1995, the Rebels were tied at 14-14 with 4:23 left in the second quarter Friday. But, Fitzgerald did not allow another score and the second-ranked Hurricanes went on to win 35-14.

Early in the game, the two teams traded scores. Fitzgerald’s Trenton Pruitt opened up the scoring with a 20-yard run with 9:37 left in the first quarter. Berrien then answered with a seven-yard run by Cameron Jones with 9:13 left in the second quarter. Mauro Meza got the point after following the Pruitt score, but the Berrien point after was blocked.

Ahead 7-6, the Hurricanes extended the lead with a 28-yard run by Marco Brown. Meza’s kick made the score 14-6 with 7:52 left in the first half. Jones would later hit Khalid Lamar on a 17-yard pass for a touchdown. Jones ran the ball in for two points, and the score was 14-14.

Fitzgerald would then go ahead for good with 1:46 left in the half with a 34-yard pass from Brad Taylor to Pruitt. Meza’s kick made the score 21-14 at the half.

The Hurricanes would then add two more scores in the second half, a two-yard run by Brown and a 19-yard run by Juwan Alexander.

Fitzgerald (6-0, 3-0 in Region 1-AA) was led by Brown, who had 19 carries for 152 yards. Alexander had six carries for 99 yards, and Pruitt added 11 totes for 89 yards. The Hurricanes had 340 yards rushing in the game.

Taylor was 2-for-6 passing for 49 yards.

The Hurricanes will be at home next week with another region encounter against Early County, Berrien (3-2-1, 1-2) will be at Brooks County in a league contest.

Telfair County 22

TIFTON — The Turner County Rebels put up 498 yards of total offense Friday night against the Telfair County Trojans and needed every one in a 28-22 Region 2-A victory.

Quarterback Kenveyon Newberry had 310 yards of offense on his own. He rushed for 63 yards on nine carries, and completed 15-of-30 passes for 247 more yards.
