Hurricanes remain unbeaten with 37-15 win

TIFTON — The Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes went to 5-0 and 2-0 in Region 1-AA Friday night with a 37-15 home win over the Cook High Hornets.
After a Hornet fumble within the opening minute of the game, the Hurricanes quickly capitalized with a one-yard Trenton Pruitt touchdown run. Mauro Meza added the point after and the score was 7-0 just 28 seconds into the game.
Cook would come back to tie the game with 5:57 left in the first half on a 56-yard touchdown run by Armad Turner. Will Dobbins added the point after and the score was 7-7.
With 3:15 left in the second quarter, Fitzgerald would take the lead back for good with a four-yard Juwan Alexander touchdown run. Meza’s point after made the score 14-7.
Pruitt would open the second half with a 22-yard touchdown run with 6:52 left in the third quarter. Meza added the point after.
Alexander would then cause a safety when he put pressure on the Cook quarterback and forced an intentional grounding call from the endzone.
Meza would then add another point after on a 21-yard scoring pass from Brad Taylor to R.J. Davis with just five seconds left in the third quarter.
The Hurricanes would later close out their scoring with a 17-yard touchdown run by Nick Williams with 7:28 left in the game. Meza kicked the point after.
Cook would later add another score with a four-yard run by Kyle Tippins. Tim Rowe would pass to Turner for the two-point conversion.
Williams led Fitzgerald with 75 yards rushing on 12 carries. Pruitt also had 10 carries for 57 yards. Taylor was 6-for-11 passing for 101 yards.
Pruitt and Tevin Stewart-Gaulden each had two catches for 33 yards.
The Hurricanes will be on the road Friday to face the Berrien High Rebels in another 1-AA encounter. Berrien fell from the ranks of the unbeaten Friday with a 12-7 loss against Albany.
Cook will also be back in league action with a trip at Mitchell County.

Turner County 36
Twiggs County 14
TIFTON — The Turner County Rebels remained red hot Friday night with a 36-14 victory over the Twiggs County Cobras. It was the second Region 2-A victory in a row for the Rebels, and the fifth overall win for coach Erik Soliday’s squad.
Javon Caswell opened up the Rebel scoring with a 15-yard interception return for a touchdown. Hiawatha Parker would then add a 72-yard touchdown pass from Kenveyon Newberry. Parker would also add the two-point conversion on his touchdown.
Todd Lawson would then score two of the next three Turner touchdowns. He had a 52-yard pass from Newberry, and a 97-yard interception return. Dee Hayles added the two-point conversion on the passing score.
Newberry would also have a rushing touchdown for the Rebels. His score was followed by a two-point run by Caswell.
“We have been fortunate, so far,” said Turner coach Erik Soliday. “We just hope to keep the slipper on.”
Newberry was 12-for-19 for 242 yards, while Parker had five catches for 130 yards.
The Rebels will be back at home Friday with a 2-A encounter against Telfair County.
