TIFTON — The Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes went to 5-0 and 2-0 in Region 1-AA Friday night with a 37-15 home win over the Cook High Hornets.

After a Hornet fumble within the opening minute of the game, the Hurricanes quickly capitalized with a one-yard Trenton Pruitt touchdown run. Mauro Meza added the point after and the score was 7-0 just 28 seconds into the game.

Cook would come back to tie the game with 5:57 left in the first half on a 56-yard touchdown run by Armad Turner. Will Dobbins added the point after and the score was 7-7.

With 3:15 left in the second quarter, Fitzgerald would take the lead back for good with a four-yard Juwan Alexander touchdown run. Meza’s point after made the score 14-7.

Pruitt would open the second half with a 22-yard touchdown run with 6:52 left in the third quarter. Meza added the point after.

Alexander would then cause a safety when he put pressure on the Cook quarterback and forced an intentional grounding call from the endzone.

Meza would then add another point after on a 21-yard scoring pass from Brad Taylor to R.J. Davis with just five seconds left in the third quarter.

The Hurricanes would later close out their scoring with a 17-yard touchdown run by Nick Williams with 7:28 left in the game. Meza kicked the point after.

Cook would later add another score with a four-yard run by Kyle Tippins. Tim Rowe would pass to Turner for the two-point conversion.

Williams led Fitzgerald with 75 yards rushing on 12 carries. Pruitt also had 10 carries for 57 yards. Taylor was 6-for-11 passing for 101 yards.

Pruitt and Tevin Stewart-Gaulden each had two catches for 33 yards.

The Hurricanes will be on the road Friday to face the Berrien High Rebels in another 1-AA encounter. Berrien fell from the ranks of the unbeaten Friday with a 12-7 loss against Albany.
