Segers, Redlinger do well at Elite 80 event
Special to the Gazette
TIFTON — Two members of the Tift County Lady Devils softball team — Kelly Redlinger and Rachel Segers — participated in the Georgia Dugout Club Elite 80 Showcase Wednesday in Marietta at Kennesaw State University.
The 80 players were placed on six teams, and each team played two six-inning games. Each player had five at-bats over the two games, and played defense in primary and secondary positions for at least eight of the 12 innings they played.
Segers pitched and played first base and Redlinger played outfield and second base.
In her pitching performance, Segers pitched a six-inning complete game. She allowed no earned runs, and struck out nine. Each player were also 2-for-5 at the plate.
“They did a good job,” said Tift coach Ivey Vickers. “I’m proud of both of them.”
The event was set up by Kennesaw Mountain head coach Lisa Chapman. There were college coaches from all over the Southeast in attendance.
“It was a pretty neat set-up. The players got to show what they could do in front of a lot of college coaches,” said Vickers. “They did a really good job (with the event).”
The 2008 Lady Devils will open their 2008 season at home Aug. 12 with a scrimmage against Berrien High. The regular season will then open up Aug. 15 with a tournament at Sandy Creek High School.
