Tidal Wave rolls over District 3 meet

TIFTON — The Tiftarea YMCA Tidal Wave swim team lived up to its nickname Saturday with an impressive win at the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association District 3 Swim Meet held here at the Baldwin Drive pool.

Tiftarea won the meet with 896 points, easily outdistancing second-place Stone Creek of Valdosta with 488. Fitzgerald came in third with 261 points.

The strong showing means the Tidal Wave will have swimmers in 51 individual events, as well as in 19 relays, during the state finals meet. That event will also be held at the Baldwin Drive pools, July 25-26.

To qualify those swimmers finished in the top three in their respective events at the district meet.

“We had a fantastic day,” was how YMCA coach Ellen Mullis felt about her team’s performance.

The Tidal Wave had several swimmers win their respective events.

They were: Mary Shoup, 100 Freestyle-11/12 Girls; Courtney Cook, Madison Honeycutt, Millicent Albritton and Casey Hall, 100 Medley Relay-9/10 Girls; Tucker Parrish, Alex McElroy, Hank McElroy and Jackson Short, 100 Medley Relay-9/10 Boys, as well as in the 100 Free Relay-9/10 Boys; Mary Shoup, Anna Johnson, Madeline Strickland and Carly Hoffman, 200 Medley Relay-11/12 Girls, as well as in the 200 Free Relay-11/12 Girls.

“I cannot put into words how proud I am over each and every swimmer that swam today,” said Mullis. “We have been having a great season, but today we swam best time after best time and really showed the community that our training has paid off by qualifying our biggest state team ever.”

She also wanted to add, “a huge thank you to all my parents and volunteers that helped work the meet today and to the Tift County Recreation Department and Craig Sowell for hosting the meet again and all their amazing team of employees.”
