Segers, Redlinger to play in Atlanta event
Special to the Gazette
TIFTON — Two senior members of the upcoming 2008 Tift County Lady Devils softball team — Rachel Segers and Kelly Redlinger — will participate in the Georgia Dugout Club Elite 80 Underclassmen Softball Showcase July 23 in Marietta.
The Tift duo were selected after participating in one of six showcases from around the state.
Redlinger and Segers will play in a pair of games at Kennesaw State College on July 23. They will be joined by several of the other top players from around the state.
The duo helped Tift County have a historic season in 2007 as the Lady Devils went to the Class AAAAA Final Four for the first time in the history of the school’s fastpitch program.
From the pitching mound in 2007, Segers had 160 strikeouts and a 1.17 ERA. She was also named as a first-team All-Region 1-AAAAA pitcher.
She also had a .257 batting average, and a .392 on-base percentage.
During June, the Lady Devils participated in a summer league with teams from eight other communities in South Georgia. Segers batted .273, and had an on-base percentage of .370.
She also pitches for a travel ball team this summer — the Southern Pride.
Redlinger batted .216 for Tift County last season. She had an on-base percentage of .331, and scored 17 runs.
During the summer league campaign, the upcoming senior batted .560, with a .714 on-base percentage. She plays travel ball during the summer with the 1X-Treme Whippets.
Both of the travel ball teams have played in tournaments throughout the Southeast the past two years.
“I am extremely proud of both Rachel and Kelly,” said Tift coach Ivey Vickers.
Besides Segers and Redlinger, Tiftarea Academy’s Heather Kelly will also participate in the event.
