TCRD 11-12 all-stars fall in title game

By Kyle Dean/Sports Editor

TIFTON — Playing in the finals of the 11-12 GRPA Class B District 3 tournament’s Red Bracket, the Tift County Recreation Department all-star team fell to Crisp County by a 15-11 score Wednesday in Moultrie at the Magnolia Sports Complex.

Crisp will meet the Sumter Stallions, who won the Blue Bracket, in a best 2-of-3 series for the right to advance to the state tournament on July 8-11.

Crisp defeated Tift by a 15-3 score on Tuesday, but found themselves down 5-0 to the team from Tifton in the second inning on Wednesday.

In the first inning, Tyler Goforth and Jacori McCoy walked and after a strikeout, Jacob Pritchett chased Goforth home with an RBI single.

Josh Jordan followed with a single to score McCoy, and Cole Glisson hit a double to score Jordan and McCoy to give Tift a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

McCoy walked and advanced around the bases on wild pitches to score another run for Tift, and the all-stars scored another run in the fourth, when Aiden Vickers singled and came home on a bobbled ball off the bat of Goforth.

Tift starting pitcher Mitchell Layfield had only allowed one base runner through the first three innings, when Crisp finally touched the Tift pitcher for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Crisp used two singles, a triple and another sharp single to cut the Tift lead in half, 6-3.

Tift responded with four more runs in the top of the fifth, however.

Jordan Walker and Pritchett singled, and were chased home with a two-RBI triple by Jordan. Glisson followed with an RBI single and he later scored on a passed ball to give Tift a 10-3.

Then the wheels fell off for Tift.

Crisp sent 16 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and scored 12 runs on nine hits and four Tift walks to take a 15-10 lead into the final inning.

That included four doubles in the inning for Crisp.

Tift came back with a single run in their last at-bat, but it was not enough in the end.

Team members included Cole Glisson, Tyler Goforth, Korey Greer, Bo Hicks, Josh Jordan, Mitchell Layfield, Jacori McCoy, Jacob Pritchett, Ross Sutton, Aiden Vickers, Jordan Walker and Morgan Williams.
