INTERNET EXCLUSIVE: Hornets knock off Holy Innocents

TIFTON — In 2006, the Holy Innocents Bears eliminated the Cook High Hornets baseball team from the state Class AA baseball playoffs in Atlanta.
On Tuesday, the Hornets picked up a measure of revenge as Cook elimianted the Bears from the state Class AA quartefinals with a pair of victories, 4-2 and 2-0.
With the sweep, Cook will now advance to the Class AA semifinals. The Hornets will play the winner of the Lovett-Westside (Augusta) series. Those teams also played Tuesday. Lovett won the first game by a 9-8 score. However, the second game was rained out and will be played Wednesday.
If Lovett wins that series, Cook will host the semifinals Monday. If Westside wins, the Hornets will be on the road to Augusta Monday.
In the first game Tuesday against Holy Innocents, Kaleb Cowart picked up the pitching win for the Hornets. He struck out six and allowed four hits. Trevor Hand picked up the save for Cook.
D.J. Johnson led the Hornets at the plate, as he went 2-for-4. Hand and Cowart each had one hit and one RBI. Josh Barks had a solo home run, and Jacob McDowell had one hit and one run scored.
Johnson was the hero in the second game for the Hornets. He was the winning pitcher, striking out 12, and allowing four hits. Johnson was also 2-for-3 at the plate with one double, and one RBI.
Cowart also had one RBI on a sacrifice fly.
Austin Steel had one double, and one run scored. Wes Warren was also 1-for-3.
