Jacobs, Anglin pull off major upset for Fillies

Special to the Gazette

TIFTON — Most of the time Alan Kramer talks in an even keel. His voice usually never wavers no matter what subject he is discussing.

However, Kramer, who is the head coach of the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Fillies tennis team, had an obvious pride in his voice Tuesday night, as he discussed his team’s performance in the NJCAA Women’s National Tennis Tournament, being held in Tucson, Ariz.

That pride especially came forth in discussing ABAC’s big win in No. 3 doubles.

Facing off against Andrea Villasana and Audrey Hernandez of Lee (Texas) College, ABAC’s Lindsay Jacobs and Brooke Anglin pulled off a 6-1, 7-5 win.

It was a huge upset as Jacobs and Anglin were the seventh seed in the bracket, while the Lee duo came in as the No. 2 seed.

The win puts Jacobs and Anglin in the national semifinals this morning in Tucson.

“This win was one of the five biggest upsets at ABAC since I have been here,” said Kramer, who has coached tennis at the school for 14 years.

“It was definitely the best-played match of their careers at ABAC. Lindsay and Brooke did an outstanding job.”

The win was especially important in the team standings.

Due to that victory, ABAC is in second place with 40 team points. That is two points more than Lee in third. Tyler (Texas) and Hillsborough (Fla.) are tied for first with 42 points apiece.

While Anglin and Jacobs’ win was an upset, Monika Lalewicz’s roll through the No. 1 singles bracket is nowhere near as unexpected.

The top-ranked player in the nation, Lalewicz advanced to the national semifinals Tuesday with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Nadia Solomon of North Central Texas College.

In three matches at nationals, Lalewicz has only lost one game.

She will face Natalie Araya of Lee (Texas) this morning in the Final Four.

ABAC’s Kedi Magakgala also advanced to the national semifinals at No. 2 singles Tuesday.
