TIFTON — Before an enthusiastic home crowd Monday morning, the Tift County Lady Devils tennis team qualified for the state Class AAAAA Final Four with a 4-1 win over the Warner Robins Demonettes.
The Lady Devils will now face off against the Milton-Northview winner at Clayton County’s International Park Saturday morning in the state semifinals.
“I am very excited,” said Tift coach Jim Clayton.
“We have worked so hard this year, and we have gotten better and better in each match.”
The outcome of the overall match was decided at No. 2 doubles as Tift’s Lauren Lindsey and Kate Marie Riddle won 6-0, 7-6 (9-7).
Tift had earlier gotten of shutouts in singles victories from Dylan Windom at No. 1, 6-0, 6-0, and from Rachel Cohen, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2.
Leah Ellis won her No. 3 singles match, 6-4, 6-3, after the overall team affair had been decided.
At No. 1 doubles, Kinsey Truman and Rebecca Johnson fell 2-6, 2-6.
The news was not as good for the Blue Devils tennis squad as Tift was defeated, 3-1, by Lowndes Monday afternoon in a boys Elite Eight match.
Daniel Gibson and Ben Benson got Tift’s only win, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles.
The Devils would have probably gotten one other win at No. 2 singles as Matt Hughes was up 6-4, 4-3, when his match was halted after the overall outcome had been determined.
