Stallions fall in heartbreaker
Special to the Gazette
TIFTON — Scoring four runs with two outs and no one on base in the top of the ninth inning, the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Stallions took an 11-10 lead over the Darton College Cavaliers in the third-and-deciding game of the two schools’ first-round series in the state Region XVII baseball playoffs Sunday.
However, Darton responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning and emerged with a 12-11 win over the Stallions. That win paired with an 8-6 win in game one of Sunday’s twinbill gave the Cavaliers a 2-1 win in the series and a berth in next week’s Final Four in Douglas.
“It was a heartbreaking way to end our season, but in that situation one team will always go home happy and the other team will go home disappointed,” said ABAC coach Steve Janousek.
Jacob Evors and Richard Hudson each had three hits and one RBI in that second game to lead ABAC at the plate.
Alex Wyche and Dax Spriggs each had two hits and two RBIs, while Brent Turner had two hits and one RBI.
Blake Lee also had one hit and two RBIs in the contest.
Game one of Sunday’s doubleheader saw ABAC commit nine errors.
“You are not going to win many games with that many errors,” said Janousek.
Jacob Gore allowed all eight runs in 7 1/3 innings of work, but only four were earned, as he took the loss.
Wyche had two hits and one RBI for ABAC. Lee and Turner each had one hit and two RBIs.
Evors, Brendan Hampton, Hudson, Spriggs and Brad Mills each added one hit for the Stallions.
ABAC ends the year with a 28-28 record.
