Rant and Rave for May 21, 2008

The nanny

“The problem isn't whether the Supreme Court has upheld drug testing or not. That won't stop challenges over who got tested or whether privacy concerns were met and doesn't begin to scratch the surface on responsibility for costs. We don't need the board being our nanny. What we need is the board to focus on kids who can't read or do math.”

No fear

“I believe if I had a child in High School, and I did a few years back, I would not mind if he or she was tested for drugs. If my child did not take them I would not have anything to worry about. On the other hand, if my child was taking drugs I would then know for sure and I would be thankful to know so that I could get my child some help and hopefully have my child around for years to come. What are you parents afraid of? Your reputation? Your teenager would not have anything to worry about unless their test did show they were into drugs.”

Stop and think

“I’m so tired of everyone blaming the city for everything that goes wrong. Did anyone stop to think that the city might not want to be involved in a project because it was a bad business decision...”

Another option

“Most of the kids that skate played baseball or have in the past. Most lose interest, though, and none of the games are attended by anyone but the parents or grandparents and some odd family members. I can't recall the last time they had 15-year-old and older teams. There is no money in Rec Department baseball. The parents pay a fee for their kids to play...those that can afford it. They barely have enough coaches, umpires, or equipment half the time. Skateboarding and skating give a lot of kids another physically challenging sport. And it is a sport that is practiced year round.”

No way

“I don’t think that there is any way humanly possible that McCain, Obama or Clinton could run this country into the dirt the way that Bush has.”
