Jewel Maurine “Judy” Dunbar Renahan

TIFTON — Jewel Maurine “Judy” Dunbar Renahan, 101, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at Maple Court in Tifton.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Ridge Avenue Church of Christ with Mr. Harold Chambers officiating.  Private interment will be held at a later date.  The family will receive friends at the church Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Born Nov. 12, 1911, in Piedmont, Okla., to the late Dr. Everett Dunbar and Pearl Jennings Dunbar, Mrs. Renahan was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank Renahan, whom she married March 16, 1931, seven brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Renahan became a Christian when she was nine years old and remained a faithful member of the Church of Christ all of her life.  She was a member of the Ridge Avenue Church of Christ in Tifton.  She met her husband in San Antonio, Texas, and they marriedwhen she was 19 years of age.  After her husband died, Mrs. Renahan became the first resident of Maple Court in 1988.  Letha Hartley, the executive director, and the staff took excellent care of Mrs. Renahan.

Miss Judy learned to be a caring person from her mother.  She loved to invite her family and friends into her home for a meal.  She was a Life Member of the VFW Auxiliary and contributed to many military organizations, especially Wounded Warriors and Hospitalized Veterans.  She lost her youngest brother in World War II when he died in a Japanese prison camp after having survived the 60-mile Bataan death march.

Mrs. Renahan is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Frankie and Tom Mitchell of Irwin County; her son and daughter-in-law, F. O. “Doug” and Margie Renahan of Tucker; 10 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.   

Mrs. Renahan cared a great deal about the children who live at Raintree Village Home in Valdosta.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Raintree Village Children’s Home, 3757 Johnston Rd., Valdosta, Ga. 31601, or Hospice of Tift Area, P. O. Box 747, Tifton, Ga. 31793.
