Gladys Barnes Gibbs
FITZGERALD — Gladys Barnes Gibbs, 88, of Fitzgerald, died Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at Tift Healthcare in Tifton. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Evergreen Cemetery with Dr. Ches Smith officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the Paulk Funeral Home in Fitzgerald.
Mrs. Gibbs was born on Aug. 16, 1921 in Ben Hill County to the late George and Sarah Garrison Barnes. She lived in Fitzgerald for the past 40 years and graduated from Macon Business College. Mrs. Gibbs was a homemaker, a former bookkeeper for Scott’s Flower Shop and during World War II, she worked at Moody Field. She was a member of Antioch Methodist Church in Adel, where she was organist for 50 years. Mrs. Gibbs was a former Lions Club Sweetheart and pianist.
Mrs. Gibbs is survived by a niece and nephews, Latrelle and Dr. Sammie Dixon of Tifton and Ronnie Barnes Ryckman of Melbourne, Fla., a sister-in-law, Emily Barnes of Melbourne, Fla. as well as several great-nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, James C. Whitehurst and J. Carroll Gibbs, two sisters and a brother.
