Local men qualify for city council seats

TIFTON —

Now that qualifying week has wrapped up, Tifton citizens in District 1 will have a choice between two candidates this Nov. 5 election.

After City Councilwoman Marianna Keesee, who served for eight years, announced that she would not be seeking re-election to District 1 of the Tifton City Council, her seat became open for potential candidates.

City Clerk Rona Martin provided The Gazette with the following list of candidates for the Nov. 5 election: James B. “Jimmy” Carson and Wes Ehlers will be running for District 1, and Johnny Terrell (incumbent) is running unopposed for District 3.

Election Supervisor Sandi Fallin wants to remind local voters that early voting begins Oct. 14 and will run through Nov. 1 at the old gym on the corner of Fourth Street and Chesnutt Avenue. Voting hours will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Voting will not be held Nov. 4.

She noted every registered voter who resides in the city limits will have the opportunity to fill out a ballot, because although some voters may not reside in District 1 or 3, there will be three questions on the ballot. One will be about the homestead exemption. The City Council is asking that it be further increased to $35,000 for all persons 65 years of age and older.

The other two questions will pertain to alcohol sales. Voters will be asked, “Shall the governing authority of the city of Tifton be authorized to permit and regulate Sunday sales of distilled spirits or alcoholic beverages for beverage purposes by the drink?” and “Shall the governing authority of the city of Tifton be authorized to permit and regulate package sales by retailers of both malt beverages and wine on Sundays between the hours of 12:30 and 11:30 p.m.?”

Editor’s Note: We will be interviewing both candidates.
