  • Apparent bullet holes found in residence

    More shooting incidents in the city have been reported by local residents.
    According to an incident report filed at the Tifton Police Department, a 28-year-old woman who lives in the 400 block of Church Lane reported Monday night that she heard several gunshots on the side of her residence. She said she didn’t see or hear a vehicle.

  • No one hurt in suspected arson

    Local law enforcement responded to several incidents over the weekend, including arson.
    According to an incident report filed at the Tifton Police Department, Sgt. Terry Allen reported Wednesday night that he responded to a residence located in the 600 block of Bellview Circle in reference to a structure fire. He said upon his arrival, he saw flames coming from the roof of the apartment. He made contact with the 25-year-old female victim.
    The woman said she and her four children were able to get out of the residence. Allen then went to a neighbor’s apartment and assisted three adults and two small juveniles out of the residence. He and two other officers helped with evacuating other nearby apartments. He said they had residents move their vehicles to prevent damages and make room for the Tifton-Tift County Fire Department to work.

  • Tift County jobless rate drops to 7.4 percent

    The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that the unemployment rate for Tift County dropped from 7.7 percent in January to 7.4 percent in February. The rate was 9.2 percent in February a year ago.

    The sun came out Saturday in time for many locals to come out and enjoy the annual Arts in Black Festival, which was held at the Tift County High School gym. Normally the festival is held at Fulwood Park, but due to rain earlier and the potential of more rain, the event was moved to the gym.

    University of Georgia President Jere Morehead will make his first visit to the UGA Tifton Campus on April 2.
    During Morehead’s stop at one of the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences’ three campuses, the president will take a brief tour of the campus and its facilities and meet with faculty, staff and students at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center.

    Local man Tom Coogle was officially sworn in as a Tift County Board of Education member by Tift County Probate Court Judge Suzanne Carter Johnson Thursday during a special called meeting. He will serve the remainder of former board member Gannon Hall’s term for District 3.
