Two unrelated shootings were reported Friday in Tifton which resulted in the lockdown of JT Reddick Elementary School. Tift County Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene of the first incident which, according to Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarbrough,occurred around 9:30 to 10 a.m. on South Central Avenue behind the Chevron station.
"As far as I know no one was hit (in that incident)," Scarbrough said.
In the second incident, a man was shot and killed near Short and Sixth streets. The female passenger traveling with him was injured but jumped out of the truck and ran from the men who had walked up to the truck and began shooting.
"We really don't know more at this time," said Scarborough. The sheriff said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the cause of the incidents.
The incidents of gun violence is weighing heavy on the heart of Tift County Commissioner Melissa Chevers.
“I so very disturbed by these incidents,” she said. “It’s hard to see what is happening (with all of the violence).”
Chevers has been very vocal about her feelings on violence in not just Tifton and Tift County.
“It breaks my heart to see the senseless violence that is affecting our community,” she said.
All Reddick students were able to leave school on time, and deputies were on hand to be sure their exit was safe.
Late Friday night, the Tift County Sheiff's Office released the following statement.
:"According to Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarbrough GBI agents and Tift County investigators are continuing their investigation of a shooting death of a young male on Short Street in Tift County Apri 26. Also a young female suffered a gunshot wound to the arm in the incident. The female is being treated at a medical facility. Investigators and agents went door to door interviewing residents and potential witnesses,
GBI Crime Scene Unit, Sylvester field office, processed the area for evidence, Authorities are also investigating a shooting incident on South Central avenue involving businesses near I-75 that were struck by gunfire. Several homes were also struck by gunfire in this area. At this time investigators are not sure if the incidents are connected, The investigation is ongoing."
