Fan drive deadline extended

TIFTON —

Due to the tremendous response we've received, we have extended the deadline in the "Tifton: We're Your Biggest Fans!" fan drive. We've received many applications and have more than 40 fans collected so far, and it's our hope that an extension will bring in even more fans after the holiday weekend.

One of our partners in the drive, the United Way of South Central Georgia, has issued a challenge on Facebook as well. United Way has partnered with Cottongim Services, a local HVAC company. For every 25 new likes on the United Way's Facebook page, Cottongim will donate a fan to the drive, beginning at 1,000 likes. Go online at https://www.facebook.com/uway.socenga, and like United Way's page, and share it with your friends.

United Way's Executive Director Greg Millette, is hopeful other HVAC companies in the area will also come on board to support the drive.

"We thank Cottongim Services for being the first to take the plunge. Companies are free to set a cap on the number of fans (about $20 each) they will donate, based on their budgetary considerations," he said.

For more information, call 848-5190.

We have also partnered with the Downtown Farmer's Market in Tifton, which will be collecting fans July 12 during the market, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. During that time, the ice cream truck from Winn-Dixie (formerly Harvey's) will be providing free ice cream to farmer's market customers. If you donate a fan, your name will be entered into a drawing to win a gift basket full of wonderful items.

For more information on the farmer's market, go to the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/DowntownTiftonFarmersMarket.

This will be the only extension, as we wish to get the fans in the hands of those who need them as soon as possible. You may apply for a fan through July 11, and donate fans through July 12 at the market.

To contact editor Angye Morrison, call 382-4321.

Two women were arrested Tuesday after hospital security personnel rescued a profusely sweating 3-year-old girl from a van in which she had been left late that morning while the toddler’s mother was in labor.
The outcome could have been much different if a Colquitt Regional Medical Center employee, who was on her break, had not noticed the girl staring at her from inside the van parked next to her car. She alerted a hospital security officer who used a piece of wire to get inside the locked vehicle.
