DEA collects 3,000 pounds of unwanted drugs in Ga.

ATLANTA — More than 3,000 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs were collected in Georgia by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration during last month’s one-day pill disposal event.

The DEA’s Atlanta field office said Thursday that 121,000 tons of drugs were collected and destroyed nationally during the Sept. 25 “Prescription Drug Take-Back” event.

Atlanta DEA chief Rodney Benson said the event was a huge success that will keep the collected drugs out of the hands of a would-be abuser.

In Georgia drugs were collected at 134 sites and then destroyed. Nationally there were more than 4,000 collection sites.
