A 9-year-old Omega boy who was struck by a vehicle Saturday died at Egleston Children’s Hospital Sunday morning.
According to a spokesman at the Georgia State Patrol Post 13 in Tifton, Jesus Lara of Omega was riding his bike east on Brooks Drive about 12:35 p.m. Saturday when he attempted to turn onto Meders Drive. He failed to stop at the stop sign and was hit by a 1998 Ford F-150 driven by Claudia Gamez, 23, also of Omega. Lara was airlifted to Egleston Saturday with severe head trauma. He died at the hospital Sunday morning.
The spokesman said Gamez, who was traveling south of Meders Drive, swerved in an attempt to avoid striking Lara. The impact knocked Lara off of the bike and he came to rest on the southwest corner of the intersection 14’ 6” from the area of impact. Due to the seriousness of Lara’s injuries, Gamez agreed to a blood toxicology test but she has not been charged. Cpl. James Metts of the GSP investigated the incident.
Lara, who had the nickname “Chicken,” was a student at Omega Elementary School. His obituary states that he was a comedian and loved the out-of-doors, loved playing soccer and loved to take care of his family. He was the son of Raul Lara and Nickey Heavener Lara of Omega.
Lara’s funeral is scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday at Omega Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Directors. The body will lie in state at the church for one hour before the service on Wednesday. The public is invited to visit with the family in the church’s social hall after the funeral.
Omega Police Chief Walt Young did not return a telephone call Monday.
