What experiences do you have that you believe make you the best candidate?
I served as County Commissioner in 2004. I completed all the required classes and became familiar with the board. I graduated from the Plight Leadership class to help develop my leadership skills. I presently serve on the Tift County Planning and Zoning Board. I have been a strong advocate to remove and or board up dilapidated houses as a commissioner and as a private citizen. I worked closely with code enforcement to make this happen. I have knowledge on how to get things accomplished and my record of working with the Commissioners and other departments speaks for that. I’m a people person and like being involved with decision-making pertaining not only to my district but all that make up Tifton /Tift County.
What are the top three issues/concerns facing District 2 particularly and what are your suggestions for improving those issues?
Water rates, business and community development and recreation. Equal water rates should not be an issue to have be addressed. The length of time this has been an issue is the issue. As a commissioner, I will try to have a summit with all officials to move forward on this issue to get equal water rates for District 2. There is a lack of vision and planning for District 2. Little or no resources are available for the district.
We have a community of people moving from South Tifton to North Tifton because we lack quality of life such as lights for safe havens, roads that have pot holes and no developments. District 2 should have business such as grocery stores, mini malls and nice restaurants, etc. I will try to meet with the Industrial Authority to come up with a solution to bring development to District 2. Our future, which is our children, is lacking an outlet. One outlet is recreation. It’s been said, “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.” I will try to expand the services of Mott Littman gym. I will try to find after-school and summer recreational programs to aid our children.
What do you believe are the top three issues/concerns facing the county overall and what are your suggestions for improving those areas?
Crime, education and jobs. I will try to have a working relationship with the sheriff and his department to see if we can control crime in District 2 to make our district safe. I would also work with the sheriff on the Fifth Street precinct to make response time faster and for the sheriff department to be more visible in our community. Education and jobs go hand in hand. Without education it’s hard for a person to get a job. I would like to work with the school board to find ways to encourage our children to go to school and stay in school. If we can get skilled, educated people to stay in Tifton, I know we as a commissioners’ board can work with the Chamber to get better paying jobs for our area.
