Smithville man enters District 13 race

— Bob Usry of Smithville announced Thursday that he will be a candidate for the Georgia State Senate District 13 seat being vacated by Tifton’s Joseph Carter, who is running for Tift Superior Court Judge.
Usry, retired from the United States Army in 2000 after 30 years of service. He served on the Lee County Utility Authority for 14 years and surveyed nursing homes for the State of Georgia for 13 years. He’s been in the cattle business since 1995, he said.
Usry said he understands the needs of Georgia’s senior citizens and the need for state support “of this very special group of citizens.”
“Local concerns many times translate into having federal support and I pledge to work closely with Sen. (Saxby) Chambless and Rep. (Sanford) Bishop to ensure the continued growth of south Georgia,” Usry said in a statement.
Usry said he “strongly opposes” any attempt to divert water resources from south Georgia to north Georgia and would submit legislation to mandate total water reuse in the metro Atlanta area in the next 15 years.
“I support the continuation of the Young Farmer Programs in our schools and continued support for FFA and 4-H strengthen Georgia’s agricultural heritage,” Usry said.
Usry and his wife, Betsy, have four children and reside in Smithville.
