TIFTON — Tiftarea residents who want to stay close to home but enjoy Independence Day celebrations have a variety of activities to choose from.

At 7 p.m. Friday at Tifton Gardens downtown, the Tifton Choral Society will present its “America the Beautiful” program in conjunction with the “Salute to Veterans” celebration.

People are encouraged to visit Veterans Park, the Atlantic Coastline Artist Guild and the Tifton Terminal Train Museum.

The Georgia Agrirama won’t have the traditional fireworks events, but from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday people can enjoy a variety of entertainment opportunities. A watermelon-eating contest, a seed spitting contest, a cake walk and live entertainment by the gospel group “Three for One” will be available. The Agrirama Train will be available for riding and historic demonstrations and exhibits, as well as the Smithsonian Key Ingredients exhibit, will be available for viewing. Barbecue chicken plates will be available for purchase for $7 each from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Admission to the Agrirama Saturday is $5 for adults, $3 for children 5-12 and there is no admission charge for children 4 years old and younger.

Fireworks displays will be held at Reed Bingham State Park in Adel and at the Enigma Firecracker Festival to be held in Enigma City Park just off U.S. Highway 82 in Enigma.

The Enigma Firecracker Festival will begin at noon Saturday and end at 11 p.m. Food vendors will sell barbecue and several entertainers, including the Highway Southern Rock Band, The Carpenters, Gary Tucker, Lane Cravey and the Shane Howell Family will perform during the day. Pony rides, bouncing toys, sack racing, watermelon eating contests and other entertainment will be on tap. Admission to the festival is $3 and free for children under 10.
