Investigation into Adams’ death still ongoing
By Angie Thompson, Senior Reporter
TIFTON — The investigation into the wreck that caused the April 22 death of Tifton police officer Terry Adams is continuing, according to an agent with the GSP’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team out of Valdosta.
Adams, 38, of Ty Ty, was a seven-year veteran of the Tifton Police Department. He was riding his patrol motorcycle on Tift Avenue when it collided with a truck driven by Shawn McCaffity, 40, of Enigma.
According to Cpl. David Hermanowski of the SCRT, Adams was headed south on Tift Avenue (Georgia Highway 125) and was passing traffic in the turn lane on his way to another call when the collision with the truck occurred. According to Hermanowski, McCaffity was pulling into Tift Avenue out of the parking lot of a business across from the Dairy Queen when the collision occurred.
Hermanowski said six of eight people who witnessed the collision have been interviewed. Hermanowski said he didn’t know where Adams was when he received the call to assist another officer but that “several people heard the siren and saw the lights before the crash.”
Hermanowski said he hasn’t yet interviewed McCaffity, who was himself injured and spent days in the hospital. McCaffity’s passenger, Clint Maddox, 57, was also injured and received medical treatment.
GBI toxicology tests performed on McCaffity have not been completed, Hermanowski said.
Hermanowski said the SCRT will wait on all of the information and testing results and then put their case together. Whether McCaffity is charged or not and, if he is charged, whether those charges will be misdemeanor(s) or felony(ies), remains to be seen.
“We will listen to all the interviews, do our drawings and come up with our determination and run it by the state court solicitor or the DA,” Hermanowski said. “When the DA or the solicitor gets it, it will be closed on my end.”
