Two women were seriously injured Thursday morning in a vehicle accident in south Tift County. Both women were transported to Tift Regional Medical Center.

A black GMC Envoy driven by Rhonda Stokes, 40, traveling west on Southwell Boulevard, allegedly ran the stop sign at Union Road and broadsided a tan Honda Accord driven by Carmine Turner, 43, who was traveling north on Union Road.

Turner is in serious condition and will remain at TRMC. Stokes is in critical condition and was put on a LifeFlight to Macon Medical Center Thursday afternoon, a Tift Regional spokesperson said.

Georgia State Patrol Trooper Chris Jewell was in charge of the accident scene.

Jewell said Stokes was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from her vehicle. He said Turner was wearing a seat belt and exited the car after the accident. Both women were on the ground when law enforcement officers and EMS arrived at the scene.

“They were both conscious and talking when I arrived,” Jewell said. He said the accident happened a little after 8:35 a.m.

It appeared Stokes’ vehicle rolled over and hit a pine tree and then righted itself.

Jewell said Stokes would be charged with failure to stop.

Turner is the finance director with the City of Tifton.
