Farmers Market to open Saturday

Special to The Gazette

TIFTON

The Tifton Farmers Market opens Saturday and is one sure way to know that summer’s right around the bend.

This classic summer activity — brimming with local produce, plants, homemade goodies, preserves, crafts and family fun — kicks off at 8 a.m. downtown at the train museum platform at the corner of Tift Avenue and Third Street next to the red caboose.

“The market keeps getting bigger and better,” said Leeann Culbreath, the market’s coordinator. “People seem more interested than ever in locally grown food and cooking at home, which also supports our local farmers.”

The Saturday markets will be open from 8 to 11 a.m. every Saturday through July, rain or shine. The First Thursday markets, held on the first Thursday of every month from 4 to 7 p.m., will continue through the summer as well.

“This Saturday, a local 4-H group will be selling local strawberries and providing information on preserving strawberries and other produce. We are also expecting early-season vegetables, homemade baked goods, ornamental plants, medicinal herb products, complimentary cinnamon rolls and samples of Sparkman’s Dairy products,” Culbreath said.

Each Saturday market will feature a local craftsperson demonstrating the craft as well as selling handmade items created from natural products. This week, JoBeth Easters Roberts of Lenox will demonstrate jewelry making with glass, stones and seeds.

Local produce, homemade baked goods, plants, preserves, medicinal herb products and art activities will be also be offered. The train museum will also be open. For more information on the train museum, call 848-2940.

And in keeping with the tradition of the Love Affair this weekend, a food art activity is also planned for all ages.

There is no charge for a sales table, but advance table reservations are required.

The farmers’ market is sponsored by the City of Tifton’s Main Street program.

For more information, or if you would like to become a vendor or volunteer, contact Leeann Culbreath at 848-2940 or Fran Kinchen at the Main Street office at 556-7439.
