A Lenox man was killed Saturday afternoon on Moore Road after his SUV struck the dirt road’s embankment and flipped.
Moore Road is a 19-feet-wide dirt road located between Bill Bowen and Old Brookfield roads. According to GSP Post 13 Trooper Sel Jenkins, Curtis Martin Horne, 53, of Lenox, was traveling south on the road in his 1988 Isuzu Rodeo when, for unknown reasons, he left the roadway and struck the embankment. Jenkins estimates that the accident happened at approximately 6:45 p.m. He said no one heard and reported the wreck immediately.
“Someone was leaving a residence and saw the vehicle turned upside down and in the middle of the road,” Jenkins said.
Horne was ejected from the vehicle and Deputy Tift County Coroner Steve Wood arrived and pronounced Horne dead at the scene.
Tift County Sheriff’s Sgt. Floyd Cospelich also responded to the scene and checked but was unable to find Horne’s pulse.
According to Horne’s obituary information, he served 10 years in the U.S. Army, including service with the 82nd Airborne Division. He was a self-employed carpenter. Horne’s memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bloomingdale Church of the Nazarene in Lenox. Graveside services will follow at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah.
Horne is survived by several children, grandchildren and siblings.
