Lady Devils injured in bus wreck

By Angie Thompson, Senior Reporter

TIFTON — The 11 people taken to the hospital after a three-vehicle wreck Tuesday night involving a school bus carrying students home from a Lady Devils’ softball game held in Valdosta have been treated and released.

SFC Ron Warren, the commander of the GSP’s Tifton post, said that the accident occurred at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday night on U.S. Highway 41 and Oakridge Church Road.

The 2008 Freightliner school bus, driven by Pamela Ann Keith, 50, of Tifton, was traveling north on U.S. Highway 41 with Earl Dean Hayes Jr., 47, of Lenox, following behind the bus. Martin Walter Saylor Jr., 21, of Axon, was traveling west on Oakridge Church Road when, according to Warren, he failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection. His vehicle, a 1989 Chevrolet pick-up, struck the right side of bus. After the truck came to rest, Hayes was unable to stop and struck the pick-up on its right side.

Bus passengers Whitney Hope Woodall, 17; Logan Leanna Little, 14; Chancey Conway, 14; Kristen Dejong, 17; Kelsey Jones, 17; Jessie Brooks, 17; Ashlyn Jones, 14; Amber McKenzie (age unknown); Cadie Cleghorn, 16; and Karli Smith, 17, were taken to Tift Regional Medical Center where they were treated and released. Hayes was also transported to TRMC where he was treated and released, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Saylor was charged with failure to stop at a stop sign.
