Anyone looking for something to do for entertainment this weekend should have no problem choosing activities. The annual Fiesta del Pueblo, the Tifton Truck and Tractor Pull and Tiftarea Auto Club’s Cruise-In are on tap.

The 13th annual Fiesta del Pueblo, a celebration of Hispanic arts and culture, is planned for today at Fulwood Park. The entertainment, food and fun will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 8 p.m.

According to Diana Mendieta, the chairman of the fiesta’s committee, the event is free to everyone.

“We have good food and lots of good entertainment and we encourage everyone to come and join us in the park,” Mendieta said.

The fiesta will feature American and Hispanic food sponsored by 20 vendors that includes more than Mexican, Mendieta said. Also, several local dance troops and the Puerto Rican Folklore Academy dancers will perform, along with dance groups such as Cultura Latina, Nergia Latina, Aficion Latina and Jim Mejia and Ritmo Dejavu will perform. Lion Heart, a local martial arts group, will also provide a program.

Mendieta said that two bands — the Mariachi Aguas Calientes and the Imperio de Mexico — will perform during the day. Imperio de Mexico will entertain during the fiesta’s street dance at the park from 6 to 8 p.m.

Children will also enjoy the day at the park with local churches and other organizations providing train rides around the park, inflatable play areas, face painting and more.

Approximately 20 education and information booths will also be set up in the park. Tift Regional Medical Center, one of the event’s sponsors, will provide such services as blood pressure and blood sugar checks.

Other sponsors of the event include the Tifton-Tift County Tourism Association, Coca Cola, the City of Tifton, the Tift County Board of Commissioners and ABAC Arts Connection.

The Tifton Truck and Tractor Pull rolled into Tifton Friday night and continues at 7 tonight. The gates at the American Legion Fairgrounds on U.S. Highway 82 W. open at 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 6-12 years old. Children 5 years old and younger are admitted free.

The event is sponsored by the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League and the Southern Pullers Association. Truck and tractor pullers from all across the Southeast will compete for Southern Pullers Association Championship points and prize money. Tyron Spearman, who coordinates the event, said that Tony O’Steen of West Green, Roy Everett of Doerun and Don Grant of Greenwood, Indiana are tough former national champions who will compete in the pull.

Competitive classes include the 5,200-pound Super Street Class, the 5,200-pound two-wheel drive modifieds, the 6,200-pound four-wheel drive modifieds plus the 8,000-pound super farm tractors. Spearman said that the pull will offer an amateur class allowing local trucks and tractors the opportunity to try the professional sled.

Local pullers participating in the competition include James Hester of Chula pulling Prime Time Chevrolet, Alan Parrish and Ricky Tawzer of Ty Ty driving Constant Sorrow, a 1978 Dodge, and Chris Hall of Omega driving Joyride, a 1987 Ford Ranger.

The Tiftarea Auto Club is hosting a Cruise-In from 4 until 10 tonight at Checker’s on Virginia Avenue. The South Georgia Classic Car Club of Valdosta; the Artisan Auto Club of Albany; the Berrien Cruisers of Nashville; the Cordele Cruisers of Cordele; and the South Georgia Mopar Association have been invited to participate. Ed Branch, one of the event’s organizers, said that Checker’s will be offering discounts for anyone bringing out a classic, antique, street rod or muscle car to exhibit during the event. Music from the '50s to the '70s will also be played during the event.
