Accused child molester dies at Tift County jail

TIFTON — Tifton man Shelton Ray Floyd, a 60-year-old inmate at the Tift County Jail, died Tuesday, says authorities.

The Tift County Sheriff’s Office released the following information in a press release Tuesday afternoon, “EMS personnel responded to the jail and transported Floyd to Tift Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at approximately 10:30 a.m.”

The press release further states that Tift County Sheriff Gary Vowell stated that he does not believe there was any foul play concerning the death of Floyd. Vowell has asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigative the death of Floyd.

Floyd was arrested Feb. 16 and charged with five counts of child molestation, two counts of aggravated sexual battery and one count of enticing a child for indecent purposes following allegations of inappropriate contact with children ranging from ages three to 10 while he was employed by Upon Eagles Wings Daycare, located at 334 E. Golden Road.

Tift County Coroner Steve Wood told The Tifton Gazette Tuesday  that Floyd’s body will be taken to Macon for an autopsy Wednesday morning. He also stated that he does not believe there was any foul play.

  • Child dies in Monday morning accident

     A one-vehicle wreck early Monday morning left a child dead and a mother injured.

    Georgia State Patrol Trooper Michael Spells told The Tifton Gazette that he was notified at 5:40 a.m. about the accident, which occurred on Zion Hope Road.

    The unofficial election summary report shows that the race between Herbert Benson and Patty Veazey for Tift County State Court Judge was close with Benson ultimately winning the seat with 2,341 votes (51.56 percent). Veazey received 2,198 votes (48.41 percent).

     Scott Murphy with the Water and Sewer Department for the city of Tifton reported today that there was a minor sewage spill (under 10,000 gallons) at Highway 82 East and Sutton Circle, and at the Agrirama Lift Station. The site became overwhelmed by water due to the recent rains.

    The Tifton Police Department has charged three people in connection with the murder of 62-year-old Sylvester Downs on March 23, according to a press release from Lt. Lee Dunston.
    Consurilla McCray Mayo, 34, of Tifton; Deonta Rashad Rich, 20, of Tifton; and Justin Rashad Dixon, 23, of Omega have all been charged with armed robbery and felony murder in regards to this incident.
